60. Traditional biomass cooking and heating result in indoor air pollution that harms the health of women and children, while gathering fuel wood consumes time that could be used for income-generating activities or school.

They also took note of the disproportionate health impacts on women and children from adverse indoor air pollution, and noted that those health and safety risks can be mitigated by improvements in shelter conditions, technology and fuel types, and the promotion of planning and good design in human settlements, along with public participation.

A number of speakers noted that energy use, particularly through poor fuel combustion, had serious consequences for human health, and urged that more attention should be given to the problem of indoor air pollution from biomass combustion in developing countries and that countries should give greater attention to improving the quality of transport fuels.

indoor air pollution, primarily produced by inefficient and dirty cookstoves and fuels, causes some 4.3 million premature deaths worldwide, above all among women and children, which represents more deaths than those caused by HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and malnutrition combined.
