In letters dated 28 February 1997 addressed to the Secretary-General and to the President of the Security Council (A/51/812-S/1997/172), the Acting Chairman of the Committee expressed deep concern and strongly deplored Israel's decision to build a new Jewish settlement in the Jabal Abu Ghneim area, south of East Jerusalem.
