وكانت نتائج جولة الاقتراع اﻷولى كالتالي:

On the first round of balloting, having obtained the required two-thirds majority, Bahrain, Brazil, Gabon, the Gambia and Slovenia were elected members of the Security Council for a two-year term beginning on 1 January 1998.
وفي جولة الاقتراع اﻷولى انتُخبت البحرين والبرازيل وسلوفينيا وغابون وغامبيا أعضاء في مجلس اﻷمن لفترة عضوية مدتها سنتان اعتبارا من ١ كانون الثاني/يناير ١٩٩٨، وذلك لحصولها على أغلبية الثلثين المطلوبة.
