In the period between 1987 and 1992 Ambassador Dhanapala headed and revitalized the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research.

I should first like to extend a warm welcome on behalf of all of us to Mr. Jayantha Dhanapala, Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs.

Mr. Dhanapala has an in-depth knowledge of the United Nations gained from 10 years of exposure in working in a senior management capacity in the United Nations.

I should also like to pay homage to his predecessor, Mr. Jayantha Dhanapala, for all his efforts during his term of office.

We listened attentively to the statement made earlier by Under-Secretary-General Dhanapala.
