On 25 June, the President of Gabon, Omar Bongo Ondimba, met President Gbagbo in Libreville to explore ways of resuming dialogue among all Ivorian political forces, reviving the activities of the Government of National Reconciliation and other steps to overcome the political impasse and, in particular, prepare for open and transparent presidential elections in October 2005.

The statement also recalled my letter to the President of the Security Council dated 20 June 1997 (S/1997/483), in which I drew attention to the request of the President of Gabon for the deployment of an appropriate international force to Brazzaville, and to the relevant letters to me from the President of the Republic of the Congo and the Secretary-General of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) (S/1997/495, annexes I and II).
