1. Global Objective 1: reverse the loss of forest cover worldwide through sustainable forest management, including protection, restoration, afforestation and reforestation, and increase efforts to prevent forest degradation

116. There was a 0.3 per cent increase in forest cover between 2005 and 2010 in the 55 reporting States, indicating progress in reversing the loss of forest cover (global objective 1). This trend, however, does not reflect a global picture.

The Secretary-General has submitted three reports for the consideration of the United Nations Forum on Forests at its eighth session on the following issues: (a) forests and climate change; (b) reversing the loss of forest cover, preventing forest degradation in all types of forests and combating desertification, including in low forest cover countries; and (c) forests and biodiversity conservation, including protected areas.

22. To reverse the loss of forest cover, prevent forest degradation in all types of forest and combat desertification, including in low-forest-cover countries, the children and youth major group considers the following to be essential:

In the forest instrument, Member States reaffirm their commitment to work globally, regionally and nationally to achieve progress towards the achievement by 2015 of the four global objectives on forests, the first of which aims to " reverse the loss of forest cover worldwide through sustainable forest management, including protection, restoration, afforestation and reforestation, and increase efforts to prevent forest degradation " .
