Success would also depend on a more extensive reliance by the Department on multilingualism: full parity should be achieved for all United Nations websites in all the official languages in terms of resources and technical support, and information should, as far as possible, be disseminated in local languages wherever United Nations information centres existed.

The priority we attach to multilingualism is not the result of an obsession; it is rooted in the deep conviction that if the Organization — its essence, its practices and its methods — reflect the potential that every culture offers, we will have a more efficient and more effective United Nations.
وما نعلقه من أولوية على تعدد اللغات ليس نتيجة لوسواس يستحوذ على تفكيرنا وإنمـا هــو أمــر تغوص جذوره في الاعتقــاد الراســخ. بأن المنظمة - في جوهرها وممارستها ومناهجها - إذا كانت مرآة تعكس الطاقات الكامنة في كل ثقافة، فسوف تكون لدينا أمم متحدة أشد كفاءة وفعالية.

4. Mr. Bertoux (France) said that his delegation attached great importance to multilingualism within the United Nations, but would be willing to work from the English version only, on an exceptional basis.

As for the proposals for strengthening the Department of Public Information to support the web site (A/57/355), the European Union attached great importance to multilingualism in the information and public relations activities of the United Nations. Efforts to expand the use of the six official languages, and other languages where possible, should continue.

His delegation also saluted the Department's efforts to preserve and strengthen multilingualism in the United Nations system, especially on the Organization's websites.
