At that first session it was decided that the United Nations Disarmament Commission should be a deliberative body, a subsidiary organ of the General Assembly, the function of which should be to make recommendations on various problems in the field of disarmament and to follow up the relevant decisions and recommendations of the First Special Session devoted to disarmament.

The catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons have been underscored in the Final Document of the First Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Disarmament, whereby it was emphasized that " mankind today is confronted with an unprecedented threat of self-extinction arising from the massive and competitive accumulation of the most destructive weapons ever produced. "
1- لقد أبرزت الوثيقة الختامية المنبثقة عن الدورة الاستثنائية الأولى للجمعية العامة بشأن نزع السلاح التبعات الإنسانية الوخيمة المترتبة على الأسلحة النووية، إذ شُدد على أن " الإنسانية تجابه اليوم خطراً لم تعرف له مثيلاً من قبل هو خطر إبادة نفسها نتيجة للتنافس على تكديس كميات هائلة من أشد ما أُنتج من الأسلحة حتى الآن تدميراً " .
