Upon instructions from my Government, I have the honour to transmit herewith a letter from H.E. the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Glafcos Clerides, dated 8 November 1994, addressed to you.

I have the honour to enclose herewith the text of the statement dated 25 September 1999 by Rauf R. Denktaş, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, in connection with the statement by the Greek Cypriot leader, Glafcos Clerides, on 23 September 1999 before the United Nations General Assembly.

In particular, on 11 November 2002, following nine months of direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in the presence of the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, the Secretary-General transmitted to Mr. Glafcos Clerides and Mr. Rauf Denktash a document intended to provide a basis for an agreement on a comprehensive settlement.
وفي 11 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2002، تحديداً, وبعد محادثات مباشرة بين زعيمي الطائفتين القبرصية واليونانية حضرها المستشار الخاص للأمين العام المعني بشؤون قبرص واستمرت تسعة أشهر، أحال الأمين العام إلى السيد غلافكوس كليريدس والسيد رؤوف دنكتاش وثيقة يُقصد بها أن توفر أساساً لاتفاق يحقق تسوية شاملة.

It is regrettable, however, that the present Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Glafcos Clerides, in total disregard of his side's past mistakes, has made it a policy priority for his administration to have an additional Greek military division brought to the island, rekindling fears that the Greek Cypriot leadership is trying to set the stage for new adventures.

The Sunday Mail of 22 October 2000 reported that the Greek Cypriot leader Mr. Glafcos Clerides " thanked Greece for its support, noting that Athens had given Cyprus military hardware worth Pound400 million over the past four years " .
وأفادت جريدة الـ Sunday Mail بتاريخ 22 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 2000 أن الزعيم القبرصي اليوناني السيد غلافكوس كليريدس " شكر اليونان على دعمها ملاحظا أن أثينا أعطت قبرص عتادا عسكريا قيمته 400 مليون جنيه استرليني خلال السنوات الأربع الماضية " .

The Advisory Committee notes that in his letter dated 10 December 2001 addressed to the President of the Council,2 the Secretary-General refers to a meeting held on 4 December 2001 between Mr. Glafcos Clerides and Mr. Rauf Denktash in the United Nations Protected Area in the presence of his Special Adviser.
وتلاحظ اللجنة الاستشارية أنه في الرسالة المؤرخة 10 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2001 والموجهة إلى رئيس مجلس الأمن(2) يشير الأمين العام إلى اجتماع عقد في 4 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2001 بين السيد غلافكوس كليريدس والسيد رؤوف دنكتاش في المنطقة المشمولة بحماية الأمم المتحدة في حضور مستشاره الخاص.

I should be grateful if the text of the present letter and its annex, which contains a letter from His Excellency Mr. Rauf R. Denktaş, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, dated 17 October 1996, sent to Mr. Glafcos Clerides, the leader of the Greek Cypriot Community, would be circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 58, and of the Security Council.

I have the honour to enclose herewith the copy of a letter dated 17 October 1996 addressed by H.E. Rauf R. Denktaş, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, to Mr. Glafcos Clerides, the leader of the Greek Cypriot Community, in connection with the information received that a group of Greek Cypriots are planning new acts of provocation in the United Nations-controlled buffer zone in Cyprus.

It is ironic that the Greek Cypriot representative would question the Turkish military presence in Northern Cyprus while " the rearmament of Southern Cyprus continues within the framework of Greek-Greek Cypriot Joint Military Doctrine " , as recently stated by the Greek Cypriot leader Mr. Glafcos Clerides (Greek Cypriot daily Politis, dated 23 April 2001).
إن من المثير للسخرية أن يشكك ممثل القبارصة اليونانيين في الوجود العسكري التركي في شمال قبرص فيما " تتواصل عملية إعادة تسلح جنوب قبرص في إطار المذهب العسكري المشترك بين اليونان والقبارصة اليونانيين " ، على نحو ما ذكره مؤخرا زعيم القبارصة اليونانيين السيد غلافكوس كليريدس (الصحيفة القبرصية اليونانية اليومية " بوليتيس " الصادرة في 23 نيسان/أبريل 2001).
