In the progress report on the Special Initiative submitted to CPC at its thirty-ninth session, it was noted that good progress in the implementation of the Special Initiative had been achieved in the areas of governance, information technology for development, education, health, population and gender.

As regards the role of the Office of the Special Coordinator for Africa and the Least Developed Countries in the implementation of the Special Initiative, it derives from its overall mandate, which is to mobilize the support and galvanize the efforts of the international community – in particular the United Nations system – for the development of Africa and the least developed countries.

Finally, UNEP is working closely with other United Nations agencies in the implementation of the Special Initiative on Africa (see A/AC.253/9/Add.1).
