The variance of $35,900 under this heading is attributable primarily to increases in the cost of medical services provided by local doctors and clinics and locally purchased supplies owing to the appreciation of the Cyprus pound during the reporting period, as well as to the increased requirements for medical supplies, including replenishment of stocks for medical emergencies.

The additional requirements were attributable to two revisions of the national staff salary scale in September 2005 (increase by 2.1 per cent) and September 2006 (increase by 4.7 per cent), as well as to the 6.5 per cent appreciation of the Cyprus pound against the United States dollar (from the budgeted rate of PoundC0.475 to the actual average of PoundC0.444 during the period).
