10. Ms. Carvalho presented the outcome of a report examining the difference in the impact of economic growth policies versus measures to decrease inequality on poverty eradication -- a relevant question in light of the high incidence of inequality within Latin America.

1. As indicated in document A/52/101/Rev.1/Add.1, the Secretary-General has received notification of the resignation of Mr. José Antônio Marcondes de Carvalho (Brazil) from the membership of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions.

Mr. MARCONDES DE Carvalho (Brazil) supported the views expressed by other speakers and, in particular, by the former Chairman on the need to strengthen the Fifth Committee secretariat.

13. Ms. Carvalho (Portugal) said that her delegation also favoured the idea of technical assistance for States parties whose initial reports were long overdue owing to a lack of resources or technical capacity.
