Mr. NAJEM (Lebanon) said that Israel was responsible for flagrant and persistent violations of human rights in the occupied territories of southern Lebanon, the western Bekaa and surrounding areas.

A report prepared by the Israeli Information Centre for human rights in the occupied territories (B’Tselem) had indicated that 322 orders for the demolition of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem had been issued, and that more than 1,000 homes had been scheduled for demolition by the current Israeli Government.

However, in the report that it presented to the General Assembly covering the period after the signing of the Declaration of Principles (A/49/511), the Special Committee concluded that the general situation of human rights in the territories still remained very serious.
