The Seminar was an outgrowth of the activities of the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM).
وقد تولدت تلك الحلقة الدراسية بفضل أنشطة اللجنة التوجيهية الدولية لرسم الخرائط العالمية.

An International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM) had been established in 1996.
وكانت لجنة توجيهية دولية لرسم الخرائط العالمية قد أنشئت عام ١٩٩٦.

A presentation was made by Prof. Fraser Taylor, Chairperson of International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM) (E/CONF.97/6/IP.5).

Recognizing that current Global Mapping efforts are primarily driven by global change concerns, future progress must also be responsive to more immediate national priorities that enhance economic growth and ensure sustainable development.

ISCGM should undertake a study to create such a forum and determine the responsibilities necessary, such as periodic assessments of progress, harmonization of standards, and mechanisms for the establishment of a Global Mapping network.

The seminar recognized the contribution of Global Mapping to the implementation of Agenda 21, pointing out the potential role of the international community and the United Nations in the development of Global Map, and suggested the creation of a Global Mapping forum.
وأقرت الحلقة الدراسية بإسهام الخرائظ العالمية في تنفيذ جدول أعمال القرن ٢١، وأشارت الى الدور الذي يمكن أن يقوم به المجتمع الدولي واﻷمم المتحدة في تطوير الخريطة العالمية، واقترحت إنشاء منتدى لرسم الخرائط العالمية.

36. At the same meeting, statements were made by the representatives of Finland, Burkina Faso, Belgium and Fiji, and by the observers from the Pan American Institute of Geography and History and the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping.

24. The Global Mapping project is an international cooperation initiative launched in 1996 through the voluntary participation of national mapping organizations, led by the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping and its secretariat, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan.

(b) The Permanent Committee on Geographical Information System Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific cooperate with the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping, the United Nations Statistics Division and other international organizations in order to integrate spatial and statistical data.
