16. In both 2004 and 2005 most contracts given to consultants and individual contractors had a duration of up to three months (less than one month or one to three months).

6. Compared to the biennium 2002-2003, the total number of consultants and individual contractors hired in 2004-2005 decreased by 2,852 (35 per cent); there were 1,912 fewer consultants (32.4 per cent) and 940 fewer individual contractors (41.7 per cent).

Under the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants or Individual Contractors (see ST/AI/1999/7/Amend.1, annex), disputes arising out of the contractual terms of consultants and individual contractors should first be addressed through amicable settlement efforts, including conciliation under the Conciliation Rules of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

In terms of educational levels of consultants and individual contractors hired, 2004 data show that 63.8 per cent of persons engaged held a university degree (18.6 per cent held a PhD, 23.5 per cent held a master's degree and 21.7 per cent had a bachelor's degree only), while 36.2 per cent had no university degree.
