We invite the scientific community and its funding agencies, at international and national levels, to promote international partnerships and programmes of research, monitoring and early warning in support of sustainable development in mountain regions.

The side event was organized by FAO in collaboration with the International Year of Mountains Focus Group, which presented a declaration affirming its commitment to long-term action in mountains and reinforcing its support for the emerging International Partnership for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions.

The International Partnership for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions was launched at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in order to achieve the mountain-specific goals of the Summit, focusing on poverty and food security in mountain communities and the protection of fragile mountain ecosystems.

43. The launching of this partnership, the International Partnership for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions, was a major outcome of the World Summit on Sustainable Development with respect to mountains, as well as a significant achievement of the International Year of Mountains.

A regional African meeting was organized in Kigali by the Albertine Rift Conservation Society and the secretariat of the International Partnership for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions (Mountain Partnership), with support from the World Bank and the MacArthur Foundation and in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
