In this connection, Japan, in cooperation with the United Nations University, hosted a symposium in Tokyo from 6 to 7 March 2006 on the scientific and technical aspects of the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles.

The Commission took note of the series of regional and subregional training courses on delineation of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles and for preparation of submissions to the Commission on the Limits of the continental shelf organized by the Division since 2005, which had benefited 53 States and 299 trainees to date.

Article 76, paragraph 5, sets restrictions on determining the position of the outer limit of the continental shelf: (a) 350 nautical miles from the baselines and (b) 100 nautical miles from the 2,500 m isobath.

With respect to agenda item 6, entitled " Issues with regard to a training course for developing States on the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles and on the preparation of submissions to the Commission in accordance with article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea " , the Commission continued its discussion commenced at the seventh and eighth sessions.

35. Encourages States parties to the Convention that are in a position to do so to make every effort to submit information to the Commission regarding the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles, in conformity with article 76 of the Convention and article 4 of annex II to the Convention, taking into account the decision of the eleventh Meeting of States Parties to the Convention;
