The opinion was expressed by one delegation that the abolition of the Senior Advisers on Science and Technology of the Economic Commission for Europe had created an additional responsibility for the Commission on Science and Technology for Development. Another delegation emphasized the importance of continuing to monitor the implementation of Commission decisions.

3. The subprogramme also continues to provide substantive servicing of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development of the Economic and Social Council in dealing with technology issues.

On the proposal of the President, the Council adopted an oral decision to hold the fifth session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development in Geneva from 21 to 25 May 2001.
