Before concluding, my delegation wishes to commend the Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific for its contributions to facilitating the exploration of new vistas, delineating areas for negotiations and agreements, and thereby strengthening the prospects for disarmament.

In particular, Thailand appreciates the work of regional centres, such as the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, which tailor their programmes and projects in response to the particular needs and interests of the region.

My delegation is pleased to note that the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, located in Kathmandu, has been serving that very purpose well.

It was suggested that the United Nations could play a role in the framework of the regular meeting of the “Kathmandu process” (a function of the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific) in 1999 in an effort to find ways to build regional confidence and reduce nuclear risks.
