Efforts have been made to ensure compliance with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL Convention).

Another welcome development is the proposal by 15 member States of the European Union and the European Commission to amend annex 1 of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships,1973, as modified by the Protocol of 1978 relating thereto, to further accelerate the phasing out of single-hull tankers.

States are required to develop international rules and standards for the Prevention of Pollution from land-based sources and take these into account when adopting national laws and regulations.
ويُطلب من الدول وضع قواعد ومعايير دولية لمنع التلوث من مصادر برية، وأن تأخذ هذه القواعد والمعايير بعين الاعتبار عند اعتماد القوانين والنظم الوطنية.

305. The international rules and standards dealing with operational discharges of pollutants relating to the normal operation of ships are contained in the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as modified by the Protocol of 1978 relating thereto (MARPOL 73/78).

In order to address the problem of pollution from garbage in the territorial sea generated mainly by pleasure craft and fishing boats (ibid., para. 309), the States in the Caribbean region adopted a Code of Conduct for the Prevention of Pollution from Small Ships in Marinas and Anchorages in the Caribbean Region.

He explained that, during an oil spill in his country's territorial waters in 2006, it had been unclear whether the Basel Convention or the 1978 Protocol to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78) applied to the situation.

23. With regard to protection of the marine environment, article 7.7.1 reads: " States should introduce and enforce laws or regulations based on the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as amended by the Protocol of 1978 (MARPOL 73/78). "

165. The Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution, on 25 January 2002, adopted a new Protocol concerning Cooperation in Preventing Pollution from Ships and, in Cases of Emergency, Combating Pollution of the Mediterranean Sea.
