In the environmental sphere, projects include the implementation of the Sustainable Development Initiative in the Arab region and activities to implement decisions of the UNEP Governing Council and the Global Ministerial Environment Forum.

As a result, member States assigned the highest priority to implementing the Initiative for sustainable development, approved at the high-level intergovernmental forum on the environment.
ونتيجة لذلك أولت الدول الأعضاء أعلى أولوية لتنفيذ مبادرة التنمية المستدامة التي أقرت في المحفل الحكومي الدولي الرفيع المستوى المعني بالبيئة.

Projects related to the environment have included implementation of the Sustainable Development Initiative in the Arab region, as well as efforts to implement resolutions of the United Nations Environment Programme and the Global Ministerial Environment Forum.
أما في المجال البيئي فقد شملت المشاريع تنفيذ مبادرة التنمية المستدامة في المنطقة العربية والعمل على تنفيذ القرارات الصادرة عن مجلس إدارة برنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة والمنتدى البيئي الوزاري العالمي.

The primary tool for UNEP support to the League of Arab States at present is the Sustainable Development Initiative for the Arab region, which was developed by CAMRE, UNEP and ESCWA.

She also underlined the need to update the Sustainable Development Initiative for the Arab Region to include tangible activities relating to capacity-building, technology, finance and institutional reform and highlighted the importance of sharing experiences among Arab countries and building upon and scaling up national success stories in the Arab region.
وشددت أيضا على ضرورة تحديث مبادرة التنمية المستدامة للمنطقة العربية بحيث تتضمن أنشطة ملموسة تتعلق ببناء القدرات والتكنولوجيا والتمويل والإصلاح المؤسسي، وسلَّطت الضوء على أهمية تبادل الخبرات بين البلدان العربية والاستفادة من أمثلة النجاح الوطنية في المنطقة العربية وتوسيع نطاقها.

Other mechanisms for sustainable development in the region that were stressed include the need to update the Sustainable Development Initiative for the Arab Region and strengthening the institutional framework so that it addresses all three dimensions of sustainable development in a coordinated and cohesive manner.

51. The moderator opened the session by highlighting the need to develop means implementing the Sustainable Development Initiative for the Arab Region and a mechanism for coordinating ministries within the Arab region.

The moderator highlighted some key questions for updating the Sustainable Development Initiative for the Arab Region, including the consideration of subregional differences, the role of national Governments and regional institutions, the provision of financial resources, indicators and monitoring of the Initiative, and clear time frames.

There have been major changes since 2002 when the Sustainable Development Initiative for the Arab Region was developed, including with regard to investment and foreign direct investment, and the updated Initiative will need to take stock of this new reality.
وقد جرت تغيرات رئيسية منذ عام 2002 حينما وُضعت مبادرة التنمية المستدامة للمنطقة العربية، من بينها تغيرات تتعلق بالاستثمار وبالاستثمار المباشر الأجنبي، وسيكون على الصيغة المحدثة للمبادرة أن تراعي هذا الواقع الجديد.

Recalling resolution 16/273 adopted at the Tunis Summit in 2004, which approved the Sustainable Development Initiative in the Arab Region and its implementation mechanisms under the supervision of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment,

50. Participants discussed the experience in the region with the Sustainable Development Initiative for the Arab Region, including its successes, shortcomings and gaps and the best way forward for updating the Initiative so that it provides an enhanced mechanism for accelerating the implementation of sustainable development in the region.

(e) Organize small working groups and round tables to discuss key topics in depth, including a dedicated meeting to develop the Sustainable Development Initiative for the Arab Region and to share country experiences and success stories;
(هـ) تشكيل أفرقة عاملة صغيرة وتنظيم اجتماعات مائدة مستديرة لمناقشة المواضيع الأساسية بعمق، بما في ذلك عقد اجتماع مكرَّس لوضع مبادرة التنمية المستدامة في المنطقة العربية ولتبادل الخبرات وقصص النجاحات القطرية؛

5. To welcome coordination between the Sustainable Development Initiative in the Arab Region and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD); and to invite the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment to coordinate its efforts relating to implementation of the plan with efforts being undertaken in the African context, with the Council's Technical Secretariat providing liaison in that connection.

The leaders appreciate the efforts of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment to give effect to the resolutions of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg 2002) through the implementation plan for the Sustainable Development Initiative in the Arab Region, and their efforts to coordinate with the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).
يثمن القادة جهود مجلس الوزراء العرب المسؤولين عن شؤون البيئة في تنفيذ مقررات مؤتمر القمة العالمي للتنمية المستدامة (جوهانسبرج 2002)، من خلال مخطط تنفيذ مبادرة التنمية المستدامة في المنطقة العربية، وجهودهم في التنسيق مع المبادرة الجديدة للتنمية في أفريقيا (النيباد).

The League of Arab States adopted the Initiative on Sustainable Development in the Arab Region, which focuses on the sound management of waste as a factor in achieving sustainable development.
وتبنت جامعة الدول العربية مبادرة التنمية المستدامة في المنطقة العربية التي تركز على الإدارة السليمة للمخلفات باعتبارها أحد عوامل تحقيق التنمية المستدامة.
