Appointed by the Secretary-General as his Special Adviser on Cyprus in 2008, Alexander Downer exercised his mandate to assist the parties in the conduct of fullfledged negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement, which started on 3 September 2008, under the auspices of the United Nations.

On 10 July 2008, in a letter to the President of the Security Council (S/2008/456), the Secretary-General announced the appointment of his Special Adviser on Cyprus, as of 14 July 2008, to assist the parties in the conduct of full-fledged negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus issue.
31 - وفي 10 تموز/يوليه 2008، أعلن الأمين العام في رسالة موجهة إلى رئيس مجلس الأمن (S/2008/456)، عن تعيين مستشاره الخاص المعني بقبرص اعتباراً من 14 تموز/يوليه 2008، لمساعدة الطرفين على إجراء مفاوضات مكتملة الأركان من أجل التوصل إلى تسوية شاملة للمسألة القبرصية.

3. Stresses its full support for the Secretary-General’s mission of good offices and for the efforts of his Special Adviser on Cyprus to resume a sustained process of direct negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement on the basis of the relevant Security Council resolutions, and stresses also the importance of concerted efforts to work with the Secretary-General to that end;
٣ - يؤكد تأييده الكامل لمهمة المساعي الحميدة التي يقوم بها اﻷمين العام والجهود التي يبذلها مستشاره الخاص المعني بقبرص من أجل استئناف عملية مستمرة من المفاوضات المباشرة الرامية إلى إحراز تسوية شاملة تقوم على أساس قرارات مجلس اﻷمن ذات الصلة، ويؤكد أيضا أهمية تضافر الجهود للعمل مع اﻷمين العام من أجل تحقيق تلك الغاية؛

In his letter dated 5 December 2001 addressed to the President of the Security Council,1 the Secretary-General informed the Council that efforts relating to his mission of good offices in Cyprus would continue at least throughout 2002 and that, in furtherance of the mission, his Special Adviser on Cyprus would continue to be assisted by a small team.
