15. Further to the letter of the Secretary-General of 27 April 2007, there are currently 188 letters of credit (see table 2 below and annex II) with an approximate value of $209 million where the letters of credit have expired but for which there are claims of delivery from the suppliers based upon documents that are pending with BNP Paribas.

It was also noted that the number of letters of credit with claims of delivery decreased from 143 (with a value of approximately $294 million) at the end of April 2008 to 139 (with a value of approximately $272 million) at the end of June 2008 (see tables 1.A and 1.B).

Against this background, a meeting was held from 7 to 17 January 2008 in Amman of the Working Group, which was composed of representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq, the Central Bank of Iraq and the United Nations Secretariat in order to minimize the number of letters of credit unpaid as at 31 December 2007 for which there were known claims of delivery.

Notwithstanding these efforts, there are currently 179 outstanding letters of credit with claims of delivery (see table 2 below and annex II to the present note) with an approximate value of $206 million where the letters of credit have expired, or are due to expire on 31 December 2007, but for which there are claims of delivery from the suppliers based upon documents pending with BNP Paribas.
