Members of the Committee thanked the representative of the State party for her frank account of the events that had occurred in her country and emphasized the seriousness of the crisis which Burundi was undergoing, a crisis that constituted a set-back for the incipient move towards democracy and respect for human rights.

Introducing the fourth periodic report, the representative of the State party outlined the current economic, political and social situation in the Russian Federation and stressed that the position of women should be viewed within the context of the problems generally encountered in those areas.
