Despite its orchestrated pronouncements of withdrawal from western Eritrea, the Ethiopian Government still occupies the entire Eritrean region lying between the Mereb/Gash and Setit rivers all the way to the Sudanese border.

5 - وتعرب البعثة عن تقديرها لكلتا الحكومتين على ما حباتاها به من ترحيب حار وحفاوة بالغـــــة في أديس أبابـا وأسمرة على السواء، وعلى ما أبدتاه من مرونة في مساندة ترتيباتها العملية، بما في ذلك عبور جسر نهر ميريب وزيارة المنطقة الأمنية المؤقتة.

5. During the reporting period, the Mission investigated two alleged shooting incidents in the area of the Mereb River (Sector Centre) and at Mukutis (Sector West), on 17 and 24 April 2003, respectively, which had been reported to UNMEE by the parties.

8. Following Eritrea's expression of concern regarding the constraints of holding future meetings of the Military Coordination Commission in Nairobi, the parties did not, however, agree on holding them either on the Mereb Bridge on the border between the two countries (Eritrea's proposal) or in their respective capitals (as proposed by Ethiopia).
