2. In the light of the provisions of General Assembly resolution 48/141, the Secretary-General proposes to appoint Mrs. Mary Robinson (Ireland) as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, for a term of office of four years.

:: A few years ago, Mary Robinson had highlighted in a statement delivered at the United Nations during a session of the Commission on the Status of Women, some of the qualities that women possessed which made them eminently qualified to manage conflicts, negotiate objectively and promote the conditions necessary for peace;

Further to my note of 13 June 1997 (A/51/924) and General Assembly decision 51/322 of 17 June 1997, in which the Assembly approved my appointment of Mrs. Mary Robinson (Ireland) as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for a term of office of four years, I am pleased to inform the General Assembly that Mrs. Robinson's term will be from 1300 hours on 12 September 1997 to 11 September 2001.
إلحاقا بمذكرتي المؤرخة ٣١ حزيران/يونيه ٧٩٩١ (A/51/924) ومقرر الجمعية العامة ١٥/٢٢٣ المؤرخ ٧١ حزيران/يونيه ٧٩٩١ الذي وافقت فيه الجمعية على تعيين السيدة ميري روبنسون )أيرلندا( في منصب مفوض اﻷمم المتحدة السامي لحقوق اﻹنسان لفترة ولاية مدتها أربع سنوات، يسرني أن أبلغ الجمعية العامة بأن فترة ولايـــة السيدة روبنسون ستمتـــد من الساعـــة ٠٠/٣١ من يوم ٢١ أيلول/سبتمبر ٧٩٩١ حتى ١١ أيلول/سبتمبر ١٠٠٢.
