2. The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, adopted by the UNESCO General Conference at its thirty-third session in 2005, also recognizes the importance of indigenous cultures and in particular the contribution of indigenous knowledge systems to sustainable development.

The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions adopted by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2005 recognizes the importance of indigenous cultures and, in particular, the contributions made by indigenous knowledge systems to sustainable development.
وتسلم اتفاقية حماية وتعزيز تنوع أشكال التعبير الثقافي التي اعتمدها المؤتمر العام لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة (اليونسكو) في عام 2005 بأهمية ثقافات الشعوب الأصلية، ولا سيما المساهمات المقدمة من نظم معارف الشعوب الأصلية إلى التنمية المستدامة.

Within the framework of the LINKS (Local and indigenous knowledge systems in a Global Society) project, UNESCO is documenting and promoting the transmission of indigenous knowledge systems and establishing intercultural dialogue on new ways to ensure that such systems are recognized and respected in regard to the contribution they can make to sustainable development.

At its fourth session, the Permanent Forum had recommended that WHO organize, host and report to the Permanent Forum at its fifth session on methods, processes and best practice of integrating indigenous traditional knowledge, medicine, healing and other health practices in mainstream health-care systems and sensitizing health personnel concerning the protection of indigenous knowledge systems.

The Permanent Forum appoints Ms. Cunningham and Mr. Saul Vicente Vazquez, a member of the Forum, to undertake a study, with the assistance of indigenous universities, on how the indigenous knowledge systems and history and the contemporary social circumstances of indigenous peoples are embedded in the curriculum of education systems, to be submitted to the Forum at its twelfth session.

The recommendations can be regrouped under four thematic areas reflecting the focus of the third session on education and gender issues: (a) indigenous pedagogy and education policies; (b) indigenous knowledge systems and their transmission to the next generation; (c) indigenous cultural and natural heritage, especially languages and underwater heritage; and (d) cultural dimensions of indigenous gender relations, women's rights and roles.
