The severe difficulties faced by least developed and landlocked developing countries had greatly weakened the competitiveness of their domestic economic operators, leading to low overall economic performance and thus to increased poverty in many of them.

UNCTAD reports on the least developed and landlocked developing countries have shaped their long-term plans of action, and its monitoring of African issues has been a key contribution to regional policy.

75. UNCTAD has been undertaking extensive activities in support of the least developed and landlocked developing countries and small island States, through such research and policy analysis as its annual report on LDCs and various technical cooperation and capacity-building activities.

She pointed out that there were no cross-references between, for example, Programme 8 in the United Nations strategic framework on least developed and landlocked developing countries and small island developing States on the one hand and UNCTAD's subprogramme on LDCs on the other, which made it difficult for member States to gain a cohesive insight into work in this area.

33. Pakistan strongly supported least developed and landlocked developing countries in their quest for greater recognition of their special financial and technical needs, and was committed to helping them to overcome the obstacles to their development goals.
33 - ومضى قائلا إن باكستان تؤيد بقوة أقل البلدان نمواً والبلدان النامية غير الساحلية في سعيها نحو الحصول على مزيد من الاعتراف باحتياجاتها المالية والتقنية الخاصة، وإنها ملتزمة بمساعدة تلك البلدان على تخطي العقبات الحائلة دون تحقيق أهدافها الإنمائية.

Mr. Ouane (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)) said that the activities of UNCTAD in the least developed and landlocked developing countries and small island developing States combined research and policy analysis, consensus-building on basic issues and technical cooperation for capacity-building.

76. The technical cooperation activities of UNCTAD aimed above all to alleviate the supply-and-demand constraints facing the least developed and landlocked developing countries and the small island developing States, with particular emphasis on human resources development, institutional capacity-building and policy advice on a wide range of issues, especially trade, investment, technology, enterprise development and debt management.

Ms. Wang Hongbo (China) said that the international community must demonstrate a spirit of partnership in implementing the outcome document of the recent High-level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on the MDGs, fulfil its commitments on development financing, including under the Monterrey Consensus, and support the efforts of least developed and landlocked developing countries to achieve the MDGs by 2015.
