While examining the progress made in the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, experts also explored in greater depth transport and logistics innovation, and reviewed the recent progress made in matters related to improvements in operation of transit transport systems for overseas trade to and from landlocked countries, including new methods that have developed to measure transit logistics efficiency in corridors.

Requests UNCTAD to continue to coordinate where possible with the relevant international organizations in monitoring, analysing and assessing the evolution of international transport systems and trade facilitation and to assist developing countries in better understanding and addressing the emerging challenges and opportunities of trade logistics in order to gain from the global trading system;

(c) Promoting public transport systems that are affordable, less polluting, more energy efficient and sustainable and that address the specific needs of women, youth, the elderly and persons with disabilities;

12. Ms. Ataeva (Turkmenistan) said that the draft resolution sought to foster cooperation in the development of sustainable transport systems. Sustainable transport was being discussed as part of a completely new, multiform dialogue that covered the issue's economic, environmental and social aspects.

Analytical work was also done regarding ways and means to improve the efficiency of transit transport systems for landlocked developing countries and on LLDC-specific issues in the current multilateral trade negotiations, particularly in preparation for the 2005 Ministerial Conference of Trade Ministers of LLDCs.

The regular meetings of the Southern African Transport and Communications Commission (SATCC), the Northern Corridor Transit Transport Authority in East/Central Africa, the Ministerial Conference of West and Central African States on Maritime Transport (MINCONMAR) and of the Southern Cone Common Market (MERCOSUR) in Latin America have served as fora for exchange of views on priority areas for action to improve the transit transport systems.

In that context, the Office prepared the report of the UNCTAD secretariat on recent developments in transit transport systems of landlocked and transit developing countries to be submitted to the Fifth Meeting of Governmental Experts from Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries and Representatives of the Donor Countries and Financial and Development Institutions, to be held in New York from 30 July to 3 August 2001.
