Annex E of the Stockholm Convention requires a Risk Profile to be developed to evaluate whether the chemical is likely, as a result of its long-range environmental transport, to lead to significant adverse human health and/or environmental effects, such that global action is warranted.

At its sixth meeting, the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee discussed the draft risk profile and the proposed conclusions for short-chained chlorinated paraffins, but was unable to take a decision because of uncertainties in applying the criteria specified in Annex E to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.

To review the discussion paper on the approach to the evaluation of chemicals in accordance with Annex E to the Stockholm Convention, set out in the annex to document UNEP/POPS/POPRC.9/INF/13, and endorse it with any amendments that it deems necessary;

The Committee has before it notes by the Secretariat on the approach to the evaluation of chemicals in accordance with Annex E to the Stockholm Convention (UNEP/POPS/POPRC.9/9), on a discussion paper on the approach (UNEP/POPS/POPRC.9/INF/13) and on a compilation of comments regarding the discussion paper (UNEP/POPS/POPRC.9/INF/14).

Paragraph (b) of Annex E to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants lists a hazard assessment for the endpoint or endpoints of concern, including a consideration of toxicological interactions involving multiple chemicals, as an element of the risk profiles to be prepared by the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee.
