17. The Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Africa of the United Nations Development Programme stated that at the mid-point of achieving the Millennium Development Goals, it was imperative that efforts by all stakeholders were intensified to reach the agreed targets and promote sustainable human development especially for those countries that were at the risk of missing them.

Speaking on behalf of the Regional Directors for the Middle East and North Africa and Eastern and Southern Africa, the Director for Programmes informed the Executive Board of the six-month extension of the country programme of Kenya and of the one-year extension of the country programmes of Angola and the area programme for Palestinian children and women in Jordan, Lebanon, the Syrian Arab Republic and the State of Palestine.
