15. In its humanitarian review, UNFICYP set out its concerns about the situation of the Greek Cypriots and Maronites living in the northern part of the island and made a number of recommendations for remedial action by the Turkish Cypriot authorities.

He quoted extensively from the report of the Secretary-General (S/1996/411), which stated inter alia that the Greek Cypriots and Maronites living in the northern part of the island were subjected to limitation of many basic freedoms, which had the effect that inexorably, with the passage of time, those communities would cease to exist.
