In West Africa, UNOWA has played a prominent role in supporting efforts to implement the Economic Community of West African States Regional Action Plan to Address the Growing Problem of Illicit Drug Trafficking, Organized Crime and drug abuse in West Africa.

70. I welcome the steps taken by ECOWAS to renew and update its regional action plan to address the growing problem of illicit drug trafficking, organized crime and drug abuse in West Africa.

In paragraph 56 of resolution 66/246, the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to strengthen the provision of technical assistance to the Office through the West Africa Coast Initiative in order to support the implementation of a regional action plan to address the growing problem of illicit drug trafficking, organized crime and drug abuse in West Africa.
