In this context, we consider it of great importance that the Conference on Disarmament has decided to establish an Ad Hoc Committee which shall, on the basis of the report of the Special Coordinator and the mandate contained therein, negotiate a non-discriminatory, multilateral and internationally and effectively verifiable treaty on the prohibition of the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.

It is also noteworthy that the Conference on Disarmament re-established the Ad Hoc Committee on Effective International Arrangements to Assure Non-Nuclear Weapon States against the Use or Threat of Use of Nuclear Weapons and set up the Ad Hoc Committee on a treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons and other nuclear explosive devices.

Subsequently, following a period of intensive consultations under the leadership of Ambassador Maimeskul of Ukraine, in which I was privileged to take part as a member of the Troika, the Conference adopted, on 11 August, a decision (CD/1547) to establish, under item 1 of our agenda, an Ad Hoc Committee to negotiate a treaty to ban the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.
