Ankara fully supported the stance taken by Mr. Denktash. Following the conference at the Presidential Palace, the Prime Minister of Turkey, Mr. Bulent Ecevit, stated that Turkey supported Mr. Denktash's position to withdraw from the talks.

It follows the " joint declaration " issued by the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, Mr. Bulent Ecevit, and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot Community, Mr. Rauf Denktash, on 20 July 1997 during the former's visit to the occupied areas, as indicated in my letter to you of 22 July 1997 (A/51/948-S/1997/580 and Corr.1).

I should also like, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus to protest strongly the participation of a high-level Turkish delegation, headed by the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Bulent Ecevit, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ismail Cem, at the " celebrations " marking the fourteenth anniversary of the illegal declaration of the so-called " Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus " , in the occupied part of Cyprus.

According to the communication, Nurdan Baysahan, Elif Kahyaoglu, Deniz Kartal, Mahmut Yilmaz, Bulent Karakas, Ahmet Askin Dogan, Metin Murat Kalyoncugil and Ozgur Tufekçi, all students, were arrested on 1 May 1996 for having protested to the Turkish Grand National Assembly against the tuition fees for higher education establishments and against the policy of privatizing the universities.
٥- ووفقا للمصدر، أُلقي القبض في ١ أيار/مايو ٦٩٩١ على نوردان بايسهان، واليف كاهياوغلو، ودنيس كرتال، ومحمود يلمظ، وبولنت كراكاس، وأحمد أسكين دوغان، ومتين مراد كاليونشوغيل، وأوزغور توفكشي، وجيمعهم طلاب، لقيامهم بالاحتجاج لدى الجمعية الوطنية التركية الكبرى على رسوم التعليم في مؤسسات التعليم العالي وعلى سياسة خصخصة الجامعات.

The verdicts were made public on 6 December 1996: Bulent Karakas, Ahmet Askin Dogan, Metin Murat Kalyoncugil and Ozgur Tufekçi were each sentenced to 18 years and 20 days; Mahmut Yilmaz was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months; and Nurdan Baysahan, Elif Kahyaoglu and Deniz Kartel were each sentenced to 3 years and 9 months.
وصدرت اﻷحكام علنا في ٦ كانون اﻷول/ديسمبر ٦٩٩١: فحُكم على كل من بولنت كراكاس، وأحمد أسكين دوغان، ومتين مراد كاليونشوغيل، وأوزغور توفكشي بالسجن لمدة ٨١ سنة و٠٢ يوما؛ وحُكم على محمود يلمظ بالسجن لمدة ٢١ سنة و٦ أشهر؛ وحكم على كل من نوردان بايسهان، واليف كاهياوغلو، ودنيس كرتال بالسجن لمدة ٣ سنوات و٩ أشهر.

In its reply of 9 April 1998 (supplemented on 19 May 1998), the Government says that Ahmet Askin Dogan, Metin Murat Kalyoncugil and Ozgur Tufekçi used explosives during an illegal demonstration, and that they were members, along with Mahmut Yilmaz and Bulent Karakas, of Dev—Genç, an illegal organization, and took part in the illegal meetings and demonstrations of this organization.
٧- وتقول الحكومة في ردها المؤرخ في ٩ نيسان/أبريل ٨٩٩١ )الذي استكملته في ٩١ أيار/مايو ٨٩٩١( إن أحمد أسكين دوغان، ومتين مراد كاليونشوغيل، وأوزغور توفكشي قد استخدموا متفجرات أثناء مظاهرة غير قانونية، وإنهم أعضاء، إلى جانب محمود يلمظ وبولنت كراكاس، في منظمــــة غير قانونيــــة هي ديف - جينش، وإنهم شاركوا في الاجتماعات والمظاهرات غير القانونية التي نظمتها هذه المنظمة.
