The present document reports on implementation of the decisions of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development related to the first programme element of category III, " Scientific research, forest assessment and development of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management " , of the work programme of the Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Panel on Forests.

1. The present report covers implementation of the decisions of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Rio, 1992) related to the first programme element of category III, " Scientific research, forest assessment and development of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management " , of the programme of work of the Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Panel on Forests.
١ - يتناول هذا التقرير تنفيذ مقررات مؤتمر اﻷمم المتحدة المعني بالبيئة والتنمية )ريو، ١٩٩٢( المتصلة بالعنصر البرنامجي اﻷول من الفئة الثالثة " البحث العلمي وتقييم الغابات ووضع معايير ومؤشرات لﻹدارة المستدامة للغابات " ، من برنامج عمل الفريق الحكومي الدولي المخصص للغابات.

Under category III, Scientific research, forest assessment and development of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, the Panel would " review existing periodic assessments of forests, including relevant socio-economic and environmental factors, at the global level; identify shortfalls in present assessments relative to policy considerations; and recommend practical ways of improving such assessments.
وسيقوم الفريق، في إطار الفئة الثالثة، البحث العلمي، وتقييم الغابات ووضع معايير ومؤشرات لﻹدارة المستدامة للغابات، ﺑ " استعراض تقييمات الغابات الدورية القائمة، بما في ذلك العوامل الاجتماعية - الاقتصادية والبيئية ذات الصلة، على الصعيد العالمي؛ وتحديد أوجه القصور في التقييمات الراهنة فيما يتصل باعتبارات السياسة العامة؛ والتوصية بسبل عملية لتحسين هذه التقييمات.

IPF addressed forest research under its programme element III, " Scientific research, forest assessment and development of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management " .5 IPF recognized the need to strengthen research, identified related institutional needs and also recognized the importance of developing and identifying research priorities at all levels.
وتناول الفريق الحكومي الدولي المعني بالغابات بحـوث الغابات في إطـار عنصره البرنامجي ثالثا " البحوث العلمية وتقييم الغابات ووضع معايير ومؤشرات الإدارة المستدامة للغابات " . وسلـَّـم الفريق الحكومي الدولي المعني بالغابات بالحاجة إلى تعزيز البحوث، وحـدد الاحتياجات المؤسسية ذات الصلة وأقـر أيضا بأهمية وضع وتحديد أولويات البحوث على جميع المستويات.
