22. Significant progress was made during the sixty-seventh session of the General Assembly towards identifying concrete and sustainable measures needed to strengthen and enhance the effective functioning of the human rights treaty body system.

In the resolution, the Assembly requested its President to launch, within the framework of the Assembly, an open-ended intergovernmental process to conduct open, transparent and inclusive negotiations on how to strengthen and enhance the effective functioning of the human rights treaty body system, and to appoint two cofacilitators to assist him in that process.

The General Assembly, in its resolution 66/254 of 23 February 2012, requested the President of the General Assembly to launch an open-ended intergovernmental process to conduct open, transparent and inclusive negotiations on how to strengthen and enhance the effective functioning of the human rights treaty body system.

1. 41. Decides to consider the state of the human rights treaty body system no later than six years from the date of adoption of the present resolution, to review the effectiveness of the measures taken in order to ensure their sustainability, and, if appropriate, to decide on further action to strengthen and enhance the effective functioning of the human rights treaty body system.

19. On 23 February 2012, the General Assembly, in its resolution 66/254, launched an open-ended intergovernmental process to strengthen and enhance the effective functioning of the treaty body system, which, on 17 September 2012, it extended to its sixty-seventh session (see resolution 66/295).
