2. The fifty-fifth session of the Sub-Commission was preceded, as had been the case in the past, by the meeting of three working groups: the Working Group on Contemporary Forms of Slavery, the Working Group on Minorities and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations.

Ms. Slimane, an independent expert, introduced the working paper (E/CN.4/Sub.2/AC.5/2001/WP.2) that she had presented to the workshop on multiculturalism in Africa organized by the Working Group on Minorities and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Kidal, Mali, in January 2001.

The proposal to hold seminars on minority and indigenous peoples' issues in Africa had been made by both the Working Group on Minorities and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations and endorsed in resolutions 2000/16, 1999/19 and 1999/20 of the SubCommission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

It was also suggested that the Expert Mechanism engage with other international human rights mechanisms, including the treaty bodies, as well as with regional and national human rights bodies, in particular national human rights institutions and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.

In the course of the International Decade, the Secretary-General and the Coordinator of the Decade have provided annual reports to the General Assembly, the Commission on Human Rights and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations. At the mid-point of the Decade, a review was submitted to the General Assembly1.

As part of the practical work experience in the United Nations system, the five fellows, from Canada, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, the United Republic of Tanzania and Venezuela, assisted the secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and attended meetings of the treaty bodies.

It should also be emphasized that there were other United Nations mechanisms dealing with indigenous issues, in particular the Special Rapporteur on the situation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous peoples, and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations.
