- The Iraqi side of the demilitarized zone extending from Hafr Al Batin on the Iraqi-Saudi border, all the way through to Um-Kasir port on the Arabian Gulf.

However, the Panel considers that the risk of contamination to water resources from these trenches exists only in the Wadi Al Batin area in the north-west of Kuwait.

Wadi Al Batin serves as a regionally important natural water collection and transport system and oil contamination in this area could have serious adverse impacts on Kuwait's water resources.
ويشكل وادي الباطن نظاماً هاماً إقليمياً لتجميع المياه الطبيعية ونقلها ويمكن أن يكون للتلوث النفطي في هذه المنطقة تأثيرات سلبية خطيرة في الموارد المائية للكويت.

For the remediation of oil contamination inside Wadi Al Batin and other oil spill areas, excavation and off-site landfilling is appropriate.
ولإصلاح المناطق الملوثة بالنفط داخل وادي الباطن وغيرها من مناطق انسكابات النفط، فإن من المناسب حفر تلك المناطق ودفن المواد المستخرجة في مدافن خارج الموقع.

Oil contamination in Wadi Al Batin poses a more serious environmental threat than the contamination in the other areas covered by the present claim.
4- ويشكل التلوث بالنفط في وادي الباطن تهديداً بيئياً أكثر خطورة من التلوث في المناطق الأخرى المشمولة بهذه المطالبة.

The primary environmental concern with oil contamination outside Wadi Al Batin is the potential impairment of revegetation where contamination is located at or near the surface.
والقلق البيئي الرئيسي فيما يتعلق بالتلوث النفطي خارج وادي الباطن هو الإعاقة المحتملة لاستعادة الغطاء النباتي عندما يوجد التلوث عند السطح أو يكون قريباً منه.

All contaminated materials in Wadi Al Batin and in the oil spill areas outside the Wadi are to be removed to a landfill for permanent disposal.

The Panel notes that residual contamination from the oil trenches and oil spills poses risks to surface and groundwater in the Wadi Al Batin area.
94- ويلاحظ الفريق أن التلوث المتبقي المتأتي من خنادق النفط وانسكاباته يشكلان خطرا على المياه السطحية والجوفية في منطقة وادي الباطن.

The Panel is aware that contaminated soil in the trenches is buried under relatively clean soil, but it does not consider removal of contaminated materials to be necessary outside Wadi Al Batin.
95- ويدرك الفريق أن التربة الملوَثة في الخنادق مدفونة تحت تربة نظيفة نسبياً، غير أنه لا يرى أن من اللازم إزالة المواد الملوَثة الواقعة خارج وادي الباطن.

Excavation and landfilling are appropriate approaches for remediation of the oil spills and oil trench areas within Wadi Al Batin as well as for the oil spill areas outside the Wadi.
5- ويشكل الحفر والردم نهجين ملائمين لإصلاح مناطق الانسكابات النفطية والخنادق النفطية داخل وادي الباطن وكذلك في مناطق الانسكابات النفطية الواقعة خارجه.

3. The Kuwaiti side engaged in actions that are in breach of the ceasefire when, at 1200 hours on 22 October 1999, four vehicles, three Landcruisers and a pick-up truck mounting a medium machine-gun, were seen in the demilitarized zone at coordinates 527125 (1:100,000 map of Batin).

The United Kingdom armoured forces also operated at a considerable distance from the centres of population in southern Iraq such as Basra, Az-Zubayr and Umm Qasr; after crossing the Saudi Arabian/Iraqi border north of Hafr al Batin, these forces turned east, entered Kuwait and pushed towards Kuwait City.
كما قامت القوات المسلحة التابعة للمملكة المتحدة بعملياتها على مسافة بعيدة من المراكز السكانية في جنوب العراق مثل البصرة والزبير وأم قصر؛ وبعد أن عبرت تلك القوات الحدود العربية السعودية/العراقية إلى الشمال من حفر الباطن اتجهت شرقا ودخلت الكويت باتجاه مدينة الكويت.
