The first round of direct talks between the leaders of the two communities on Cyprus took place outside New York under the auspices of the Secretary-General.

15. UNFICYP, in cooperation with international and local partners, facilitated 89 bicommunal events in which 4,472 people from both communities participated, coming together to promote the reunification of the island and support the ongoing negotiations between the leaders of the two communities.

121. Following the change of leadership in the Turkish Cypriot community in April 2010, direct negotiations between the leaders of the two communities resumed on 26 May 2010.
121- وعقب تغير قيادة الطائفة القبرصية التركية في نيسان/أبريل 2010، استؤنفت المفاوضات المباشرة بين زعيمي الطائفتين في 26 أيار/مايو 2010.

In particular, on 11 November 2002, following nine months of direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in the presence of the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, the Secretary-General transmitted to Mr. Glafcos Clerides and Mr. Rauf Denktash a document intended to provide a basis for an agreement on a comprehensive settlement.

78. The unequivocal stance of the European Union at all levels and the consistent attitude of all major actors involved in the efforts for the promotion of a solution to the problem of Cyprus led to the meeting between the leaders of the two communities on 4 December 2001 and the subsequent decision to resume talks on 16 January 2002.
78- وأدى موقف الاتحاد الأوروبي القاطع على كل مستوياته، والموقف المتسق لكل الفاعلين الرئيسيين المشاركين في جهود التوصل إلى حل للمشكلة القبرصية إلى اجتماع بين زعيمي الطائفتين في 4 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2001، والقرار الذي أعقبه باستئناف المحادثات في 16 كانون الثاني/يناير 2002.

We currently find ourselves engaged in an effort to implement a process consisting of an Agreement concluded and signed by the two communities in Cyprus on 8 July 2006 and complemented by letters exchanged between the leaders of the two communities and the then Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations, Mr. Gambari, on 15 November 2006.

14. During the reporting period, UNFICYP, in cooperation with international and local partners, facilitated 118 bicommunal events with the participation of 5,648 people from both communities, who came together to promote the reunification of the island and support the ongoing negotiations between the leaders of the two communities.
14 - وخلال الفترة المشمولة بالتقرير، قامت قوة الأمم المتحدة، بالتعاون مع شركاء دوليين ومحليين، بتيسير تنظيم 118 نشاطا مشتركا بين الطائفتين بمشاركة 648 5 شخصا من كلتا الطائفتين اجتمعوا للدعوة إلى إعادة توحيد الجزيرة ودعم المفاوضات الجارية بين زعيمي الطائفتين.

28. UNFICYP, in cooperation with international and local partners, facilitated 65 bicommunal events, with the participation, since my last report, of more than 4,000 people from both communities who came together to promote the reunification of the island and support the ongoing negotiations between the leaders of the two communities.
28 - ويسرت قوة الأمم المتحدة لحفظ السلام في قبرص، بالتعاون مع شركاء دوليين ومحليين، 65 مناسبة مشتركة بين الطائفتين شارك فيها منذ تقريري الأخير أكثر من 000 4 شخص من كلتا الطائفتين، وذلك لتعزيز إعادة توحيد الجزيرة ودعم المفاوضات الجارية بين زعيمي الطائفتين.

4. In a communication of 17 April 1997 addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/1997/320), I stated my determination to pursue intensified efforts to bring about a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue hoping it would be possible to convene direct talks between the leaders of the two communities.
٤- وفي رسالة مؤرخة في ٧١ نيسان/أبريل ٧٩٩١ وموجهة إلى رئيس مجلس اﻷمن )S/1997/320(، بيﱠنت أنني عاقد العزم على بذل جهود مكثفة من أجل إيجاد تسوية شاملة لمسألة قبرص، آملاً أن يتسنى لي عقد محادثات مباشرة بين زعيمي الطائفتين.

7. In its resolution 1092 (1996) of 23 December 1996, the Security Council, inter alia, welcomed the efforts of the Secretary-General’s Special Representative, and of those working in his support, to prepare the ground for open-ended direct negotiations in the first half of 1997 between the leaders of the two communities in order to secure an overall settlement, and called upon the parties to cooperate with him.
٧- وفي قرار مجلس اﻷمن ٢٩٠١ )٦٩٩١( المؤرخ في ٣٢ كانون اﻷول/ديسمبر ٦٩٩١، عمد المجلس، من بين جملة أمور، إلى الترحيب بجهود الممثل الخاص لﻷمين العام، وبجهود من يعملون لدعمهما، من أجل تمهيد الطريق لاجراء مفاوضات مباشرة مفتوحة في النصف اﻷول من ٧٩٩١ بين زعيمي الطائفتين بغية تحقيق تسوية شاملة، وناشد الطرفين أن يتعاونا معه.
