At the Vienna International Centre, unfortunately considerable difficulties arose due to the restructuring of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs.

1. That they continue to support proposals for strengthening the coordination between the Centre for Human Rights at Geneva and the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs at Vienna, in relation to the servicing of the Committee;

Upon relocation of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs (CSDHA) offices to New York in 1993, the vacated offices in E building enabled consolidation of various United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) offices.

59. Technical advisory services furnished by the former Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs in the areas of popular participation and cooperatives; local-level community, family-based and self-help approaches have been particularly valued.

The Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations Office at Vienna has, in the context of Agenda 21, given more attention to the social dimensions of the concept of sustainable development, focusing on the role of social policy and social institutions in the reorientation of unsustainable lifestyles and production patterns.

123. The redeployment to this Department of the relevant functions and activities of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs at Vienna and the World Food Council secretariat at Rome should enhance United Nations capacity for coherent policy development and provide more effective support for central intergovernmental bodies.

There is also a reduction ($42,400) in Vienna as a result of reduced requirements for library books, periodicals and supplies following the transfer of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs to New York.

Various working groups, inter-agency meetings and ad hoc consultations had been organized with a high level of participation by competent United Nations bodies, specialized agencies and the Centre for Human Rights, including representatives from the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Branch of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs.
