135. At the conclusion of his mission, the Special Representative made the following appeals on behalf of the children of Sierra Leone.

It is in that context that I take this opportunity, on behalf of the children of Sierra Leone and of all the children in the least developed countries, to renew the appeal for the cancellation and rescheduling of all debt, as applicable, for the sake of our children.

Considering that thousands of Sierra Leonean children had been abducted, drugged, armed and forced to serve as combatants, and knowing that hundreds of their young sisters and brothers were victims of merciless and deliberate amputations, one would have expected the children of Sierra Leone to tell us that their primary objective is the need to protect children from war, violence and exploitation.
فنظرا لكون آلاف أطفال سيراليون قد تمَّ خطفهم وتخديرهم وتسليحهم وإكراههم على الخدمة كمقاتلين، وعلما بأن المئات من أخواتهم وإخوتهم الصغار كانوا ضحايا عمليات بتر متعمدة بلا هوادة، كان المرء يتوقّع من أطفال سيراليون أن يقولوا لنا إن هدفهم الأول هو لزوم حماية الأطفال من الحرب والعنف والاستغلال.

21. The agreement also refers to the vulnerability of the children of Sierra Leone, who have suffered disproportionately and on an unprecedented scale throughout the war and who require special attention to ensure their protection and welfare during the consolidation of peace.

National Commission for children of Sierra Leone. There is an urgent need to establish a national commission for children to ensure that the protection and welfare of children will be a central concern in the aftermath of the war, and that this will be reflected in national priority-setting, policy-making and resource allocation.
