18. The Convention's First Review Conference in 2004 provides an opportunity to focus awareness to an even greater extent on the progress that has been made in implementing the Convention as well as on the challenges that still remain to overcome the inhumane effects of anti-personnel mines.

Since the States Parties adopted their first comprehensive review of the operation and status of the Convention on 3 December 2004 at the Convention's First Review Conference (the Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World), tremendous additional progress has been made toward the fulfilment of the Convention's purpose.
