33. The February 2008 elections in the Republic of Cyprus brought to power Demetris Christofias, who, immediately upon assuming office, expressed his intention to reach out to the Turkish Cypriots and their leadership.

On 4 November, the Council held consultations of the whole during which the Special Adviser briefed it on the latest tripartite meeting of President Demetris Christofias, Derviş Eroğlu and the Secretary-General, which was held on 30 and 31 October in New York.

108. On 3 September 2008 fully-fledged negotiations on the Cyprus problem, under the auspices of the United Nations, commenced between the leaders of the two communities, President of the Republic, Mr. Demetris Christofias, and leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat.

3. At the time of my previous report (S/2008/744), the Greek Cypriot leader, Demetris Christofias, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, had begun full-fledged negotiations under United Nations auspices aimed at the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.
