The Council was encouraged by the work of the joint African Union-United Nations Chief Mediator for Darfur, Yipéné Djibrill Bassolé.

In accordance with the understanding reached in the Council's prior consultations, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended invitations under rule 39 of the Council's provisional rules of procedure to Mr. Edmond Mulet, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, and to Mr. Djibrill Bassolé, Joint African Union-United Nations Chief Mediator for Darfur.

On 9 February 2009, the Government of the Sudan and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) met in Doha, under the auspices of the Joint African Union-United Nations Chief Mediator for Darfur, Djibrill Bassolé, and the State of Qatar.

On my part, in a communiqué dated 7 April 2012, I welcomed the signing of the Framework Agreement, paying tribute to Presidents Alassane Dramane Ouattara and Blaise Compaoré and the action of Minister Djibrill Bassolé.

4. The Joint Chief Mediator, Djibrill Bassolé, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Ahmed bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, visited Darfur from 28 November to 2 December to promote the provisional outcomes of the Doha negotiations and to discuss with stakeholders outstanding issues.

The Council held an informal interactive meeting on 22 June 2011 with the African Union/United Nations Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur, Djibrill Bassolé, and Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr Al-Thani.

From early April until early June, the African Union-United Nations Joint Mediation, led by the Joint Chief Mediator Djibrill Bassolé, conducted a series of workshops aimed at enabling the armed movements to strengthen their cohesion, and their capacity and readiness to engage in direct negotiations with the Government.
