56. Mr. Edrees (Egypt) welcomed the technical assistance that UNODC was extending to developing countries to reinforce the capacity to counter devastating scourges such as terrorism, corruption and transnational organized crime.

9. Mr. Edrees (Egypt), speaking on behalf of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, said that it supported the continuing efforts of UNRWA to fulfil its mandate to provide basic services to the Palestine refugees in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the host countries.

Mr. Edrees (Egypt) (spoke in Arabic): Egypt attaches special importance to the integrated and coordinated implementation of and follow-up to the outcomes of the major United Nations conferences and summits in the economic, social and related fields, which have made major contributions to the agenda for action on international development based on partnership, respect and solidarity.

Mr. Edrees (Egypt) (spoke in Arabic): Despite the convening of the Annapolis Conference to revive the Middle East peace process, new hopes for achieving a peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and realizing the objective of establishing an independent sovereign and viable Palestinian State before the end of 2008, this objective was not accomplished, regretfully.

Mr. Edrees (Egypt), introducing draft resolution A/C.2/61/L.13, said that it was a reflection of the Secretary-General's report (A/61/67-E/2006/13), which demonstrated that the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, continued to deepen the economic and social hardships of the Palestinian people.

Mr. Edrees (Egypt): I would like at the outset to thank the Secretary-General for introducing earlier today his report on human security (A/64/701), which will undoubtedly assist Member States in fulfilling the commitment they made in the 2005 World Summit Outcome (resolution 60/1) to discuss and define human security in the General Assembly.
