In February 2002, at its seventh special session, the UNEP's Governing Council unanimously adopted decision GC SS.VII/7 requesting the UNEP Executive Director to designate a team of UNEP experts to prepare a desk study outlining the state of Environment in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in and to identifyied areas of major environmental damage requiring urgent attention.

Following a request made by the UNEP Governing Council at its twenty-first session, the Executive Director prepared the report, Desk Study on the Environment in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

By decision 22/1 V, the Council/Forum welcomed the desk study outlining the state of the Environment in the Occupied Palestinian Territories presented by the Executive Director and decided to request him, within the mandate of UNEP, to implement the recommendations of the desk study.
26 - رحب المجلس/المنتدى، في مقرره 22/1 خامساً، بالدراسة المكتبية التي توجز حالة البيئة في الأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة المقدمة من المدير التنفيذي، وقرر أن يطلب منه، في حدود ولاية برنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة، تنفيذ توصيات الدراسة المكتبية.

(c) A UNEP desk study outlining the state of the Environment in the Occupied Palestinian Territories was released in February 2003. A second phase of implementing the recommendations of the desk study has started, and will continue at least until February 2005;

Also requests the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme to initiate and facilitate the implementation of the recommendations made in the desk study on the Environment in the Occupied Palestinian Territories published by the United Nations Environment Programme in 2003 and the environmental assessment of the areas disengaged by Israel in the Gaza Strip issued by the United Nations Environment Programme in 2006;
