The General Assembly authorizes the Ad Hoc Committee of the Whole of the General Assembly for the Final Review and Appraisal of the Implementation of the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa in the 1990s to hold one additional meeting, subject to availability of services, on an exceptional basis, in order to complete the work of the Committee.

In this respect, my delegation is particularly pleased that the Ad Hoc Committee of the Whole of the General Assembly for the Final Review and Appraisal of the implementation of the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa in the 1990s this morning adopted the resolution on UN-NADAF and NEPAD.

The study was cited widely in the international press as well as by NGOs and the Chairman of the Panel of Eminent Personalities for the Final Review and Appraisal of the Implementation of the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa in the 1990s.

A number of important messages emerged from that meeting which are important both for the Final Review and Appraisal of the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa in the 1990's (UN-NADAF) and for the plenary debate on NEPAD.

Regarding UNCTAD's contribution to the preparatory process for the Final Review and Appraisal of the New Agenda, the UNCTAD secretariat will be making contributions to the intergovernmental preparatory process to be established for that purpose.

In its resolution 54/234, the General Assembly stressed the paramount importance for the Final Review and Appraisal of the New Agenda of an independent evaluation that should include a thorough review of existing initiatives on Africa.
