9. Ms. Hartono, speaking on behalf of Committee members from the Asian region, said that the goal should be not only to eliminate discrimination, but to build a new society in the context of sustainable development.

51. Ms. Hartono said that the most important consideration was to enhance the effectiveness of the Committee and the Convention, although any decision should take into account the need for the Committee to meet in New York whenever circumstances so warranted.

Would that not make the institution of marriage superfluous?
