With regard to the question of the impact of structural adjustment programmes on economic and social development, the Economic and Social Council, at its substantive session of 1997, welcomed the decision of the Interim Committee of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to make the Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility (ESAF) a permanent facility.

Among other issues raised at the meeting were the need to develop good practice guidelines focusing on the rights of the child, and the need to contact United Nations agencies and bodies, particularly the IMF and the World Bank, and encourage them to take into account the impact of structural adjustment programmes on the rights of children with disabilities.

(c) The United Nations, in cooperation with the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and other multilateral development institutions, should study the impact of structural adjustment programmes on economic and social development and assist adjusting countries in creating conditions for economic growth, job creation, poverty eradication and social development.
)ج( ينبغي أن تدرس اﻷمم المتحدة، بالتعاون مع البنك الدولي وصندوق النقد الدولي وغيرهما من المؤسسات الانمائية متعددة اﻷطراف، أثر برامج التكيف الهيكلي على التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية ومساعدة البلدان التي تقوم بعملية التكيف على تهيئة الظروف المواتية لتحقيق النمو الاقتصادي وإنشاء الوظائف والقضاء على الفقر وتحقيق التنمية الاجتماعية.
